New Unit Assistance Industry Working Group (NUA I-WG) has published the first edition of an industry document on pre-operational safety reviews.
The New Unit Assistance Industry Working Group (NUA I-WG) has published the first edition of an industry document on pre-operational safety reviews. This document aims to assist personnel at new nuclear projects in enhancing the safety of their nuclear power plants during commissioning and operation by comparing actual operational activities with safety standards set by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO).
The NUA I-WG has developed the industry guideline document to support the management and personnel of new nuclear power plants in conducting self-assessments, preparing for, and implementing pre-operational reviews conducted by WANO and the IAEA to ensure safe start-up and reliable operation of new units.
Over 30 individual members of the NUA I-WG representing industry nuclear operators and organisations worldwide such as Argentina, Belarus, Belgium, Brazil, China, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Russia, South Korea, Turkey, UAE, the UK, and the USA supported in the development of this document by sharing their experiences and lessons learnt, as well as providing the opportunity to analyse existing documents. Existing guidelines are used primarily by IAEA and WANO experts, while this publication focuses on supporting operating organisations.
“This is a significant achievement for our team. There are currently 61 units under construction in 15 countries worldwide and I am confident that this guide will prove to be indispensable for all operating organizations of new NPPs in preparing for IAEA and WANO reviews during the pre-operational phase,” commented Nikita Konstantinov, Chair of the NUA I-WG and Deputy General Director at Rosenergoatom.
The I-WG continues to work on a wide range of guidelines, which are to become useful for all nuclear power plant (NPP) operators worldwide. The industry invites all nuclear companies that are building NPPs to join the NUA I-WG. Previously, the working group published a Roadmap to Operational Readiness of NPPs, which is being used by the future operating organisations.
